I’m not sure if this is a sentiment shared by most, but Valentines day is not all that special to me. And thats nothing to do with the commercialism of the day (although if that’s your bag check out my Valentines Wishlist HERE). I guess when you are in a committed relationship you have many days throughout the year that can be labelled ‘Valentines day’. My Starr and I go away together on holidays or spa weekends often enough. We dine out frequently and treat each other ‘just because’, not thinking about the time of year or waiting for a specific occasion to do so. As a result, we won’t necessarily go all out on V day. One year we even stayed in and watched DVDs in our PJs and ate pizza and ice-cream in bed. It’s just not that big of a deal.
I remember it meaning everything to me when I was single. I just could not be alone on Valentines day and have spent my fair share of February 14th’s with insignificant randoms – the exact opposite of what Valentines day should be about. I had to have flowers and chocolates and something to unwrap. I had to have the candle lit dinner and the champagne. The irony is those lavish V days were meaningless because they were spent with people who I didn’t have true feelings for. This year My Starr and I will spend it at our favourite restaurant (the place where we first met) and we will probably be in jeans and converse. But because this is a valentines day post, and because I’m lucky enough to have valentines day come around more than once in a year, here’s an outfit fitting for that all important romantic night; whether it be the first date with a new suitor or just another night out with the one you love, you can never go wrong with a little black dress. xoxo
